Toll fees for trucks are set to rise starting from April 1st.
Toll fees for carriers set to increase in two stages this year
There are two toll fee increases scheduled for carriers this year. The first, a 10% hike, will take effect on April 1st, while the second, also a 10% increase, is set for September 1st.
The highest tolls per kilometer will be for trucks with a gross weight over 12 tons and 4 or more axles from the EURO 0, 1, and 2 categories, traveling on highways. Until the end of August, they will pay 47 cents per kilometer, and from September 1st, the price will rise to 52 cents per kilometer.
The lowest toll fees apply to buses with a EURO 6 certification, with tolls of 4 cents per kilometer on highways, 3 cents for first-class roads, and 2 cents for second-class roads until the end of August. From September, the prices will be 5, 4, and 2 cents, respectively, for these buses.
In response to the carriers' dissatisfaction with the toll fee increase, Regional Minister Ivan Ivanov stated a few days ago that he had met with them.
"It is clear to everyone that the revenue from the toll system is invested in new roads and maintaining the existing network. This solidarity, which is expected from everyone, is present. They expressed understanding in this regard. The government's measures are showing results, and we expect increased revenue collection," said Ivanov.
From May 1st, drivers of passenger cars will pay higher vehicle registration fees, with an increase of 10 BGN, effectively bringing back the old price of 97 BGN, which was in place before 2023.
The price increase for road fees was announced months ago. A draft decree underwent a 14-day public consultation. The transport sector in the country opposed the toll fee increases, and organizations have declared their readiness for protests.
The decree, passed on Monday, does not introduce a daily vignette. This is likely to happen with subsequent changes once it is regulated under the Road Law. Amendments to the law have already been submitted to the National Assembly by the Cabinet.

Trump Announces New Tariffs for All Countries
President Donald Trump Announces New Tariffs on Imports, Including a 10% Base Tariff on Nearly All Goods Entering the U.S.
President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on imports, including a base tariff of 10% on nearly all goods entering the United States, with significantly higher rates for dozens of countries deemed to have unfair trade practices. The new policy, unveiled during an event in the Rose Garden that the White House referred to as "Liberation Day," marks a major shift in U.S. trade strategy with far-reaching consequences for global supply chains.
The base tariff will apply to goods from almost every country, except Canada and Mexico, whose corresponding goods under the USMCA trade agreement are exempt. Goods from non-compliant USMCA sources will continue to be taxed at 25%. The 10% tariff will take effect on Saturday, April 5.
Additionally, a set of "reciprocal tariffs" will take effect on April 9. These higher rates are targeted at around 60 countries, including some of the United States' largest trading partners, such as China, the European Union, Japan, and South Korea.
In Numbers: Key Tariff Rates
• Vietnam: 46%
• Cambodia: 49%
• India: 26%
• China: 34%
• Japan: 24%
• Thailand: 36%
• South Korea: 25%
• Switzerland: 31%
• European Union: 20%
• United Kingdom: 10%
• Brazil: 10%
The tariffs are aimed at "ending foreign tariffs, removing barriers, and stopping currency manipulation," Trump commented. Trump's announcement follows a separate 25% tariff on foreign-made vehicles and auto parts, announced last week, which is set to go into effect at midnight on April 5.
